This cast-iron mantel was installed after the Edwards family remodeled their house in 1857. It replaced the original, Greek Revival-style mantel, which was likely moved upstairs to the bedroom directly above. Behind the summer cover it is stamped "Dodge's pat. Mar 13 1856"
Cast-iron mantels gained popularity in the first half of the 19th century as the Industrial Revolution made their production possible. Less expensive than wood or marble, these mantels would not be used in the best room of the house.
