Cutting Threaded Rod - The Best Way To Cut!

Here is my method for cutting threaded rod! Basically, you will cut/reshape the threads on the cut end after you make the cut. You will need a couple of nuts, a die for the size threads you are cutting, something to cut the rod with, and something to smooth and round over the cut end.

A tap and die set is one of those useful items a shop should have. I don't use mine very often, but when I need it, I am glad I have it. Personally, I feel if you can go pull a set out of your kit when you need it, you are showing that your skillset is at least a small step above average.

If you could use a kit, click one of the links below. Both of them are highly rated on Amazon and contain both Metric and SAE cutters.

A good first set:

This kit is a little more comprehensive, in case you find yourself doing a lot more work:

Cutting oil - Very important for successful use of your taps and dies.

Make sure you follow all safety precautions, including but not limited to safely glasses, hearing protection, dust protection, etc. This video is for entertainment purposes only.

Step 1 - Put two nuts on the rod, move them past the point of your cut, and use two wrenches to tighten them on each other.

Step 2 - Spin the die onto the rod so it moves down next to the two nuts.

Step 3 - Cut the rod.

Step 4 - File/grind the edges of the cut.

Step 5- Lube the end of the rod, use a wrench to hold one of the locked nuts, and spin the die off until it gets to the end. It will cut/reshape the threads that were damaged during the cutting of the rod.

Step 6 - Unlock and remove the two nuts.

You are done! Now get to work on your project!
